The Auditors of Public Accounts (APA) was created during Connecticut's colonial period with a mission that continues to serve its citizens today. These auditing and oversight functions were valued as essential to good government more than 100 years before Connecticut became a state and have continued throughout its history.

In fact, the office's origins can be traced to a 1662 charter granted to the Colony of Connecticut by King Charles the Second of England. In 1750, colonial documents refer to the auditing of "the Colony's account with the Treasurer of the Colony."

In 1786, when the Office of the Comptroller was created, the APA was placed under its supervision and remained so until 1937, when legislation established the independent status of our office.

Its organization, with two state auditors not of the same political party, makes Connecticut unique among state auditing agencies. From its origins, Connecticut's audit function has been performed by two state auditors from different political parties.
